Advantages of Native Peonies

Minimal labor requirements: Peonies are incredibly low maintenance, requiring very little physical work to thrive. I call them a harvest-and-forget-about-it plant. While that’s not entirely true, it’s pretty dang close. Our peonies are in a separate field at the far back of our property. Once peony season is over, I don’t revisit the field until the fall when it’s time to cut them down unless I get an urge to do some weeding.

Longevity and generational potential: Another perk to growing peonies is their longevity. These flowers can live for more than 100 years, so the upfront work can keep giving you beautiful blooms for generations.

Ideal blooming season for families: Speaking of my boys, the blooming schedule of peonies aligns perfectly with their school calendar. Our peonies typically bloom from late May through early to mid-June, and by the time my boys are out of school in mid-June, the peony season is just wrapping up.

Popularity in weddings: Peonies are one of the most sought-after wedding flowers and that’s not changing anytime soon. Their lush, romantic blooms make them a favorite among brides and wedding planners.

Features of Native Peonies

The peony is a deciduous shrub with a tall, semi-spreading plant. Its branches are sturdy, with long internodes in annuals. Its leaves are large and long, soft and thick. Its petiole is approximately 15 cm long, thick, and obliquely extending. Its leaflets are long ovate, rarely notched, and have blunt, drooping tips.

The peony prefers warm, cool, dry, and sunny environments. It prefers sunlight but tolerates partial shade. It is cold-tolerant, drought-tolerant, and tolerates weak alkalis, but avoids stagnant water and is sensitive to heat and direct sunlight. It thrives in loose, deep, fertile, high, dry, well-drained neutral sandy loam. It grows poorly in acidic or heavy clay soils, with an ideal ph of 6.5-7. It thrives in ample sunlight, but cannot tolerate intense summer sun. Temperatures above 25°c cause the plant to go dormant. The suitable temperature for flowering is 17-20℃.

FAQ

Q: Do peonies smell better than roses?

A: Peony. Peonies are one of our favourite flowers, and they've got a fragrance to match their stunning blooms. The scent is a beautifully soft intertwining of jasmine, rose and gilly flower. This is similar to roses in some ways, but they're a little less peppery and a little sweeter.

Q: Are peonies high maintenance?

A: Peony plants are generally low-maintenance plants that are not frequently bothered by pests or diseases. However, they can be susceptible to a few common problems, including: Botrytis blight: This fungal disease can cause brown spots on the leaves and flowers, as well as a gray mold on the stems.

Q: What is the rarest color of peony?

A: Purple is one of the rarest colours in nature. Therefore our peonies can be considered exclusive. Purple is a colour you can't simply ignore: You either love it or hate it.

Q: Do peonies attract ants?

A: It's a well-known fact that peonies attract ants, which crawl around on the flowers, feasting on the sticky sugars they secrete. Once the flower opens fully, and the sucrose has been consumed, the ants depart, whether they are outside or on someone's dining room table.
